Born and raised in Portland Oregon, Susan is firmly rooted in
Northwest culture and lifestyle. Most of her family still lives in the
surrounding region. One of four children, she has strong family ties and
values. Having gown up in Southeast Portland in the Woodstock area, she
has been witness to and a supporter of neighborhood growth and
improvement. With Milwaukie only minutes away, she recalls a time when
there was a vibrant downtown core in Milwaukie that serviced local
neighborhoods. The unique small town ambience and large backyards in
well-established neighborhoods made Milwaukie the perfect place to
invest in a home. That was 25 years ago.
Susan and her husband Michael live with two cats. She has been
working as a Registered Nurse for over 29 years. For the past 14 of
those years, she has been an avid volunteer in the City of Milwaukie.
She became involved in her neighborhood association (Ardenwald Johnson
Creek) in 1992, quickly emerged as an advocate for neighborhood
livability and traffic safety and was appointed to the Milwaukie Traffic
Safety Commission. She held a membership and chairperson position for
several years as the Commission was transitioned to the Milwaukie
Traffic Safety Board. She was instrumental in the development and
implementation of a traffic calming program in Milwaukie. She served on
The Juvenile Diversion Panel in Milwaukie for two years prior to being
elected to her present seat on the Milwaukie City Council. She is an
advocate and presenter for the Hands Project in Milwaukie. The programs
pledge "I will not use my hands or my words for hurting myself or
others" is the foundation for the program and the message taken
into local schools.
Susan believes our limited resource of green space should be
protected and enhanced and our economic development approach should be
sensible and reflect community values. The City Council is ultimately
responsible for setting and implementing good policy and making
decisions that are fiscally prudent whilst remaining accountable to the
tax-paying citizens who elected them to office.
