City Now Requires Removal of Wayward Shopping Carts

The City of Milwaukie’s City Council adopted a new ordinance which began regulating shopping carts and their retrieval from streets, bus stops, and other areas inside the City’s limits.

Soon, at Walgreens, Albertsons, Safeway, Save-a-Lot, Dollar Tree, Tuesday Morning, Salvation Army, Rite Aide, and Jo Ann Fabrics you will see signs on the carts and at store exits describing shopping cart removal as theft. Also, businesses within the City will be required to post a toll-free number on their carts that citizens can call if they find a cart that needs to be retrieved. Beginning May 1, 2008, stores will have 72hrs after notification to pick up a shopping cart. If they don’t pick up the shopping cart the City will impound it and issue a citation with a fine amount of $50 for each cart. Stores with shopping carts that originate in the County but end up in the City are also subject to citation if they do not pick up the cart. However, the City cannot require stores outside the City to issue the postings on the shopping carts or in their stores.

Here are the things that you can do to help with the removal of the shopping carts: First, do not take the shopping cart off the premises. Second, call the store (see below for the phone number list) and report the shopping cart location. When you call a cart in please have an address if possible.
